My current works called ‘Sculptural Interventions’ are created at the homes of friends and relatives and peoples I met by accident. Residents literally open their houses in which furniture, objects and humans are subject to a process of sculpturing. The sculptures are captured in photo’s forever; they only ‘last for a moment’ at the actual day of the making.
Coincidence plays an important role in these Sculptural Interventions. The pictures are solidified moments, silent witnesses of a process in which light, material and the specific location, atmosphere or context are definable elements. Personal story lines, daily encounters or philosophical considerations among others fall in with the objects during this process.
These sculptural interventions are by definition always under construction, temporarily experiments frozen in time. In that aspect my way of working differs from more traditional forms of sculpture as it allows for larger improvisations and associations.
I do not limit myself to a specific theme or topic but merely observe, create an intermediate conclusion in the form of a ‘photo as a capture or snapshot’. The photos are constructed captures of time, place and action staged in a moment and mediated by a photo.
With this process, something virtual is created, bringing real elements/objects together in a moment of time.
During my residency from January till March 2017 at the Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) I worked together with the Axis Art group. They invited me to work in a small deserted village together with a local Chinese artist (Kong Delin) I focussed on the making of a series of new sculptural interventions. I was confronted with the fact that I am an outsider in China, coming from Europe, with not much knowledge of their specific traditions and history. As we looked around a lot of the houses were empty and there were only five families still living there. Many key themes came into my mind. Such as: Tradition, transience, attaching, changing, rejecting, detaching, the memories, the spirit of the place, the changing time. I tried to make a connection with the spirit of what was left over.
Ton Zwerver (b. 1951, NL) lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld academie and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. His work has been in a number of exhibitions, in both The Netherlands and abroad. He has held solo exhibitions at PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, Galerie Carlos Poy, Barcelona, and Gemeente Museum, Arnhem to name a few. He is currently teaching at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Basisjaar, Beeldhouwen, an activity that he combines with his art practice.
